The Contemporary Collective, a group of six women from Saudi Arabia, have curated a major exhibition of contemporary art using works from the British Council Collection. The exhibition opens on 18 October in Jeddah at ATHR.

The exhibition attempts to dissect areas of human behaviour, to examine our common feelings, and anxieties, expressed through the familiar, the peculiar, the uncanny and the transcendental. From humans covered in shaving foam to a strange ‘butterfly boy’ there is something to keep everyone interested.

It features leading UK artists, such as Anish Kapoor, Ryan Gander, Yinka Shonibare MBE, Rachel Whiteread and Cornelia Parker. This is the first time that these artworks have been shown in Saudi.

The exhibition is the culmination of the British Council's latest training programme for curators and arts managers. The Collective have learnt about curatorial practice, arts management and audience development, which will enable them to play an important role in the rapid growth of Saudi’s cultural sector.
