Amir Ramzan , Saudi Country Director

Welcome to the British Council Saudi Arabia website.

It is a great privilege for me to be here at such an exciting time – for both the British Council and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia which has embarked upon an ambitious national Vision 2030 plan. As the UK’s international organisation for education and culture the British Council seeks to make a positive contribution to this plan in the years ahead, both in the fields of arts and culture, education and scientific research.

We have been a committed partner to Saudi Arabia for the last 50 years, helping to introduce young men and women in Saudi to a wide range of cultural and educational opportunities available through the UK.

We are on the ground in Riyadh, Jeddah and Al Khobar, where our men’s and women’s English language centres offer courses to over 18,000 students annually.  We are also proud to deliver over 120,000 UK qualifications annually helping to further learning among young Saudis looking to develop their professional skills or  travel abroad.

As you explore this site you can find out about UK qualifications available through our centres, as well as our online English language learning materials. We want to help learner’s access global opportunities through the effective use of English in international contexts.

The UK has some of the world’s top-ranking universities, and we are delighted that many young Saudis choose the UK as their destination for further or higher education. In 2015, we held the first Education UK alumni awards, celebrating the achievements of UK graduates who have returned to make great contributions to Saudi’s economy and society, and I am very much looking forward to the 2016 edition.

We are also very active in the arts and our new programme for young Saudi curators Contemporary Collective is supporting six young women on the path to become Saudi’s next generation of cultural leaders. Another important area for our future work in Saudi is supporting science and research in the Kingdom. In 2016, we held six science collaboration symposia – these are workshops and talks which allow top researchers in Saudi and the UK to connect and discuss new solutions to the important global challenges we all face; this year, the focus was on Water & Energy. In all of our work, we look at how we can foster collaboration and share knowledge between the UK and Saudi.

We have a team of over 300 staff in Saudi Arabia all working to build stronger ties between our two countries. I recently joined the team as Country Director and I hope to make many lasting friendships and connections in the Kingdom.
